Leonardo's Mountain of Clams and the Diet of Worms: Essays on Natural History by Stephen Jay GouldMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Leonardo's Mountain of Clams is the title essay in this anthology and highlight's Da Vinci's brilliant insights in Bible-defying natural history facts from observing fossils. Also in the general theme here of evolution as promulgated and contended with is the epistolary respectful disagreements between
James Dwight Dana and Darwin wherein Dana long clung to a theological view before giving in to Darwin's mountain of evidence. More generally, Gould shows how assuming linear development as opposed to variational bushiness has led to entrenched inaccuracy in other fields.
