The Demon by Hubert Selby Jr.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
In art such as film or literature, the extreme psychological states of intense dreams, euphoria, mania, etc. are rarely effectively portrayed. Selby comes very close with stylized writing that freed of much punctuation and other tethers can keep pace with the a mind that is, as Jim Morrison would say, "squirmin' like a toad." Casual sex, thefts from office rooms, murder by stabbing through layers of clothing; always penetrating. The subject of this story devolves from promiscuity to psychopathy breathlessly and assuredly.
